Hi, I'm pat and this is the pat mAcdonald a.k.a. Purgatory Hill website. "Purgatory Hill" was my Lowebow blues pseudonym that became the name of the band Purgatory Hill (my duo with melaniejane which is on hiatus).

You can listen to all the tracks for free and/or pay something if you want to.
Please look around.
Thanks! <3

“In The Red Room” was the loudest album I ever made. It was just me solo, highly amplified in a local bar. Now I’ve finished the quietest album I ever made. Recorded alone in my room at the Holiday Music Motel, it's as stripped down as it can possibly be, played and sung mostly live, with a few added harmonies. Plus a moment of hidden harmonica...

LOL (Light O’Love) is 36 minutes of playful melancholy for those of us who are beginning to accept mortality as real, if not inevitable. My best songs come from sadness or frustration, and i tend to embellish. Stained glass windows and funhouse mirrors become means of escape (or ways to navigate the inescapable). Here, the moon (🌕 and 🌙) is both oracle and scapegoat, more a mascot than a deity (kind of like Jesus to the MAGA cult).

Ten of these songs, i wrote myself, and three are co-writes. "Waves On The Blue" was written with my friend and brother Eric McFadden, "Madam Black" with my clever charismatic nephew Connor MacDonald, and "A Tug On The Line" (the oldest song on the album) was written in 1994 (30 years ago!) in Brazil with the mighty, mystical Marina Lima.

The cover image, adapted from the 1902 film "Le Voyage Dans La Lune / A Trip To The Moon" may change phases in subsequent versions of this album.

After its broadcast debut on SteelBridgeRadio.com (coinciding with a listening party in The Tambourine Lounge - date TBA), the public release of this album will in 3 phases: First, for a limited time, it will be exlusively available on this website. For the second phase, after the production of a limited run of CDs (and possibly cassettes) it will become available through Bandcamp. Then possibly at some point in 2025, it will be released to the streaming platforms.

This album was mastered by Nathan James at Vault Mastering Studio, Phoenix, Arizona.

If you'd like to support this project, at this point there are three ways. You can buy a download for the price you choose (i can't set it to less than a dollar) or, if you don't want to download, you can use the donation button to make a contribution. The third way is to listen here for free and share with your friends by sending or posting a link. Thanks for listening! Thanks for sharing! ♥️

TROUBADOUR OF STOMP

Recorded in Portland, Oregon 2005 by Patrick Kearns, this was me and my "Chet" electroacoustic guitar at our most bombastic. Patrick Kearns and Adam Mackintosh sat in on percussion for "Steel Bridge Song".

"A number of people over the years have expressed interest in hearing an album of just me singing and playing a bunch of my songs on acoustic guitar.
While it is true that most of them are written that way, i was never really excited to do a whole album like that. This one just sort of slowly materialized out of spare parts. "Lockbox Babies" are the songs that go into storage soon after they"re written. They're the misfits, the ones that don"t make it onto albums. This is not to say they were bad songs. They just didn"t seem to fit anywhere. Some showed sides of me i didn"t want people to see. Many were memoirs of loneliness and heartbreak appropriately played solo and privately. But some could be barroom anthems and i don’t know why i stopped playing them. None have been released before in any form that i know of. A few were never played again after these recordings were made. I shouldn"t be surprised that they all fit together (all being such misfit birds of a feather) but i am.
The oldest (tracks 2 & 6) are circa 1995, captured by Paul Dieter at Jackson Browne's studio in Santa Monica, CA. The opening song was recorded by Vincent Gates at his home in Seattle -a 2006 session my friend Joe Kaftan helped set up. Track #9 was written at the St. John Songwriter Festival and recorded there by Steve Hamilton. The rest are all self-recorded, sonically improved in the mastering by Holiday Music Motel engineers Billy Triplett (at the Holiday) and Steve Hamilton at Makin’ Sausage Studio in Milwaukee. I can’t thank these guys enough. Thanks to melaniejane too !!! And thank you for investing a little listening time. It"s only twelve songs. Most are under three minutes." -p.mAcd

Lockbox Babies Vol. 2 (1970s)

In cart Not available Out of stock

Ten previously unknown tracks from the '70s, dubbed from the original 5" and 7" reel-to-reel tapes show sides of the 18-26 year old songster few have known. "This is a record of a time when I was living out of my car, on couches, cots, etc. It reflects my '70s living conditions: crude, minimal, and kinda dirty."
